QUESTION: I’m a caregiver for a family member with a disability. How do I signal flexibility needs without seeming less committed?
Ruth Pankratz, Gabby Communication
Many professionals balance work and personal commitments while sustaining high performance. Flexibility is not about doing less—it’s a strength supported by reliability, proactive planning, results, and responsiveness via text, phone, or email. Promote flexible work style success, such as delivering timely outcomes, exceeding expectations, and actively participating in teamwork.

Frame your caregiving role positively in interviews: “I’m fully committed to excelling here and seek flexible hours to maintain peak productivity while supporting my family.” Emphasize how it enhances your dedication and reliability.

Here, less is more. Keep the details private until the offer stage, when the employer has decided they want you. Frame your requests around logistics and outcomes vs. personal details. Be clear about your ask (e.g., specific start/end windows, remote options, etc.). Reassure them that your request won’t affect your performance or commitment by highlighting your reliability and productivity.
Emily Christakis
Seek out employers known for being work/life-friendly champions with flexible work arrangement policies. Research the culture on social media, Glassdoor and Reddit. Target roles that are explicitly remote or hybrid. Don’t bring up your personal situtation during the interview. Focus on your ability to solve the hiring manager’s problems. Negotiate the terms of your employment after the offer.
