How can I strategically pivot to an entirely new industry when I lack direct experience?

QUESTION: How can I strategically pivot to an entirely new industry when I lack direct experience?

Laura Fontenot, Masterwork Resumes

Career changes can feel overwhelming, so I recommend taking it a step at a time. Start by researching the industry and connecting with people already in the field. Use your resume and LinkedIn to highlight transferable strengths and any related courses or projects that show you’re already moving in that direction.

Scott Gardner, Vitae Express

Instead of “pivoting” think of it as “repositioning”. Highlight transferable skills, reframe your experience to match industry needs, and tailor your resume to the role you’re seeking, not the role you had. It’s a good idea to learn the lingo, earn a cert if needed, and use your network to open doors.

Kate Williamson, Scientech Resumes

Pivoting to a new industry is hard but doable. Start by clarifying your target roles and companies in that industry. Study job postings to see where your skills align and where gaps exist. Make a list of 20-30 companies; focus on small/medium ones. Then grow visibility by connecting with employees and initiating conversations that show genuine interest in their work and experience at the company.

Jaime Chambron , Career Agility System

When I work on career pivots, I start with inventorying relevant skills and results that will translate. I also explore the client’s recent and appropriate education and highlight any school projects that demonstrate applied knowledge. Lastly, we look at any relevant volunteer work to highlight.

Pick the industry you want, then figure out which of your skills fit. Fill any gaps with targeted learning. Talk to people, tweak your story, and don’t be afraid to start with related roles. Stay curious, work hard. And here’s something to think about: Being new can actually be your edge.
