In an interview, how do I answer the question, “Tell me about yourself?”

QUESTION: As someone with a hearing impairment, should I mention this on my resume or during interviews, and if so, how can I do so in a way that focuses on my qualifications and strengths?

Donna Shannon, Personal Touch Career Services

Rather than stating a disability on a resume, look for the field on the actual application. Instead of using this field to screen candidates out, employers want to take advantage of federal programs that offer tax breaks and other incentives for hiring people with disabilities. In the interview, only point out that you need reasonable accommodation if they ask.

Robert Rosales, EZ Resume Services

Review the job description carefully and mention your hearing impairment only if it impacts your ability to perform essential job functions or if you need accommodations. Frame it positively by discussing how you’ve successfully navigated challenges, showcasing your adaptability, problem-solving skills, and communication ability. Focus on your qualifications and readiness for the role.

Donna Tucker, CareerPRO Resume Center

The resume is not the place to mention your hearing impairment. Instead, focus on your strengths and qualifications. During interviews, you only need to disclose it if you need special accommodations. When discussing it, emphasize your communication abilities, your adaptability, and any relevant skills you’ve developed as a result of your hearing impairment—stressing how you can excel at the job.
