QUESTION: I feel overqualified for many postings but don’t get interviews for more senior roles. What should I do?
Cheryl Minnick, University of Montana
Candidates may under-represent their qualification via weak verb choice. Senior-level roles respond best to action verbs that convey ownership, leadership, and impact (orchestrate, spearhead, execute), rather than those that sound supportive or task-oriented. Review action verbs in the job description and intentionally align yours to reflect your level of leadership and influence.

Bypass algorithms by networking directly with hiring managers. Referrals dramatically increase interview chances for senior roles where employers worry about retention or salary expectations with overqualified candidates. And, of course, Tailor your resume for each senior role—highlight only relevant leadership achievements.
