In some fields, an advanced degree can be beneficial, but not all fields require or value them. Before enrolling, research job postings, talk with people in the role, and compare the expected return with the cost and time involved. In many careers, specialized skills, certifications, and hands-on experience may offer a faster path to advancement.

An advanced degree may help you, and it may not. Check the requirements and preferences in target job posts to get a quick overview. Often what’s needed is upskilling in other areas, such as AI and other workplace technologies. You can easily acquire these skills without investing in an advanced degree. Also, experience and skill can override posted requirements with the right job search strategy.

An advanced degree will not rescue a stalled career. It makes sense when it is required or tied to a clear financial return. Otherwise, it may become an expensive way to avoid the harder work of gaining experience, building relationships, and making a deliberate move
