What's the best approach to tailoring my resume for multiple job applications without starting from scratch each time?

QUESTION: What’s the best approach to tailoring my resume for multiple job applications without starting from scratch each time?

Jaime Chambron , Career Agility System

Start off with having a solid resume that communicates your strengths and accomplishments targeting a specific job title. I only recommend my clients change the target job title if it is slightly different from what is in the resume. Otherwise, spend your time crafting a tailored cover letter to submit with your resume.

Laura Fontenot, Masterwork Resumes

Consider writing a “master copy” of your resume that details out all your roles, success stories, and skills. From there, you can simply cut or summarize irrelevant info for each job application. I also recommend focusing on the summary section; tailor that to the job description!

Laura Smith-Proulx, An Expert Resume

First, build a master resume with all your achievements, then save differently named copies to customize for each job TYPE you’ll pursue. Tailor each version with relevant data, keywords, and emphasis on the related job goal, then use as-is or with minor changes for specific applications. Readying these versions will save time and help you put a focused resume in front of employers.

Nancy Grant, Regional Career & Employment Services

Find a common thread among the type of positions you are applying. Format your resume so you can easily swap out details to match specific industries so you don’t have to start from scratch each time. Also, you can ‘save as’ your resume according to theme and create a repository for easy access. Trying to be a “jack of all trades” may present you as a “master of none”.
