QUESTION: How should I approach tailoring my resume for different industries and job types? I don’t have a specific target at present – I’m qualified in many areas.
Nancy Grant, Regional Career & Employment Services
Start with one clear target, then tailor from there. A résumé that tries to be everything to everyone ends up as “jack of all trades, master of none.” Speak the industry’s language, focus on what matters most, and show you’re the best fit for that role. Then, work on another version to use for other industries or jobs. Being targeted will get you noticed. Being general will get you ignored.
Jaime Chambron , Career Agility System
First, you need clarity on the number one target role you want to lean into. Then, I recommend starting to build one core resume focused on the one job type to start. Key is for a resume to lean you into a specific job type. From there, if you have more unique responsibilities or results that are for a different job type, then I would create a second version to lean you into the second job type.
