Can I create and send a resume in Google Docs?

QUESTION: Can I create and send a resume in Google Docs?

Deirdre Rock, Composed Career, LLC

Across our industry, we do not recommend creating your resume in Google Docs. ATS platforms are optimized for Word‑based documents, and Google’s formatting doesn’t always translate cleanly when converted. This can lead to parsing errors, broken layouts, and lost keywords. Create your resume in Microsoft Word, then upload it as a DOCX or PDF, depending on the application requirements.

Yes. Draft in Google Docs, but don’t send a live link; it can expose comments, edit history, and your Google identity. Export a PDF for the final submission unless the employer or ATS asks for .docx. If they do, send a cleaned Word file after removing comments, tracked changes, hidden text, document properties, and file-name clues. Send the resume, not its history.

Cheryl Minnick, University of Montana

While you CAN create a resume in Google Docs, it best not to apply online with a Google Doc. Do this instead: in your Google file, select Download, click MS Word (.docx), and then download it as a MS Word file and apply!

Scott Gardner, Vitae Express

Google Docs is fine for creating resume content. Just be careful when submitting applications. Many employers prefer a PDF to preserve formatting, while some request a Word document. The key is to build it cleanly, avoid heavy graphics, and export the right file type for each application.

Amy Adler, Five Strengths Career Transition Experts

You absolutely can use Google Docs to produce your resume. The formatting is clean and the interface will do everything you need to do. Save your document as a PDF to your desktop, name it “Your Name Resume,” and email/upload it as requested; in no case should you share the native Google Doc with your target companies.
