QUESTION: Who should I address my cover letter to if I can’t find a name?
Kate Williamson, Scientech Resumes
Don’t default to a generic salutation until you’ve tried to find the actual person. Check the job posting for clues about who the role reports to, search LinkedIn by title and location, or even call the company and ask. If you truly can’t identify them, “Dear Hiring Manager” is your best generic option as it’s direct, professional, and avoids outdated or gendered language.

First, make sure that you truly can’t find the name. If it’s not listed in the job posting, you may be able to find out via LinkedIn or the company/organization’s website. Barring that, you can use “Dear Hiring Manager.” Never use “Dear Sir/Madam” or “To Whom It May Concern,” as these are outdated and impersonal.
