In an interview, how do I answer the question, “Tell me about yourself?”

QUESTION: In an interview, how do I answer the question, “Tell me about yourself?”

Ruth Sternberg, Entrepreneurial Job Search

I recommend a three part answer: How you got into the field and role you have, one or two concrete examples of what makes you successful (strengths and a few accomplishments), and why you are attracted to the role you are interviewing for and believe you are a good fit. Practice your answer! They are really asking you why you want to work there and think you should be hired.

You want to build a rapport with the interviewer within 90 seconds. Rather than repeating facts from your resume, start with a quick snapshot of your experience, such as a relevant position, education, or skill. Then dive into a focal point that would be one of your top qualifications for the job. This can be one of your key achievements, a recent project, or your career goals.

Jane Roqueplot, JaneCo's Sensible Solutions

Mention by having your resume, he/she knows your background, so your response is to ensure an understanding of your interpersonal strengths, people-awareness, and emotional intelligence, all verified in your professional DISC style report. Share an interview leave-behind to provide details beyond what you highlight as examples demonstrating that your DISC knowledge confirms how you will thrive.

Laura Fontenot, Masterwork Resumes

I’m sure most people have heard about this question at this point! While I still recommend giving a brief overview of yourself (experience, education, industries, and titles—stick with the relevant bits), I tell my clients to end it with something personal and interesting: “And beyond that experience, I’m also passionate about volunteering in my community/running marathons/other interesting note.”

Robert Rosales, EZ Resume Services

Interviewers often start with this question as it provides a window into your personality, communication skills, and ability to present yourself compellingly. Prepare for this by crafting a 30-45 second response that includes your name or relevant years of experience in the role/industry, skills or expertise, and a key accomplishment. Close with your interest in the role or company.

Brenda Mariah, Push Career Management, LLC

“I teach the formula:
I LOVE
I’M PROUD OF
I’M EXCITED TO…

Steer clear of your family and upbringing in favor of what you love about your work/field, what you’ve done to stand out, and what you’re excited to bring to that employer’s table.”
