QUESTION: With the New Year approaching, how can I make sure I’m ready to make a career move in January?

Fred Coon, Stewart, Cooper & Coon, Inc.

Discern what you bring to the company’s table. Put that in quantifiable terms, determine your key skills, figure out who needs you and why (targeting). Put together a professional resume that clearly shows in quantifiable terms your value to the company. If no numbers, don’t put it on the resume. Put together your target list. Send emails then follow up on the telephone. Make a plan. Work the plan!

Start by zeroing in on your career target—what are you excited to do next? Once you’re clear on that, get your story together. Make sure that your resume and LinkedIn profile are up to date and targeted. Craft and practice your “pitch”—a brief outline of what you’re looking for and why. And don’t forget a networking plan to connect with the folks who can help you make a positive change in 2019!

Think about what’s important for you in this next move and why you want to make it. Research companies whose values and mission align with your own. Follow these companies on LinkedIn and connect with people who work at these companies. Create a career transition plan with tasks and a timeline. Finally, hire a professional resume writer to update your resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile!

There’s never a “right time” to change your life. Change comes only when you make a decision and charge full speed ahead–doesn’t matter whether January has come or gone. Update your resume, craft a compelling LinkedIn profile, reach out to people in your network, start researching companies. Lucky breaks occur when preparation meets opportunity. You’ll be ready.

Michele (McCann) Kelley, CareerPro, Inc.

Companies secure candidates now for January 2019 jobs. Your timing is perfect! To hit that job market: 1. Research potential employers and identify their future trajectories. Update your resume and LinkedIn profile to align with their trends. 2. Consult with a resume professional, career strategists, and recruiters. Post the resume in online job boards. 3. Attend holiday networking events.

Tidy up personal business to free yourself of distractions. Research target job posts to find skill gaps; seek training to make up shortfalls. Equip yourself with stellar career documents and tune up your LinkedIn profile. (A professional resume writer can help with all of that.) Make a list of prospects; research their online presence to find useful information for cover letters and interviews.

Now is a great time to get your ducks in a row. I recommend a three-pronged, research-based approach: 1) Do your homework to create a list of companies to target. 2) Create list of who is, and who needs to be, in your network, to fast-track your way into the companies on your list. There is no greater sleuthing tool available than LinkedIn! 3) Get your resume and LinkedIn in order!

Hit the ground running by reserving your holidays to accomplish the “Big Three” career boosts: 1) Dedicate the resources to reinvent your resume with the help of a certified resume writer 2) Attack your LinkedIn presence with a vengeance by improving your profile and adding new connections 3) Educate yourself on your industry’s technology changes, business launches, and key decision-makers
